Founded in 1875, the Brinkvale Psychiatric Institute has played a leading role in the treatment of mental illness in the greater New York City area for over a century. Brinkvale Psychiatric is famed for the willingness of its doctors and staff to confront any challenge and go to great lengths to help the people who are entrusted to our care. Across the state and the nation, Brinkvale Psychiatric carries a reputation for taking extraordinary measures to deliver the care that is needed.
Built on the site of an abandoned quarry, Brinkvale Psychiatric is naturally cooled even during the hottest summer days. This contributes to the calming, soothing atmosphere that helps everyone at Brinkvale Psychiatric work toward better mental health.
Brinkvale Psychiatric is proud to be part of the New York City hospital system, and the relationships forged with other hospitals and doctors in our decades-long partnership has contributed to our depth of knowledge and our willingness to do whatever it takes to help anyone who enters our doors.
One of the greatest minds in the history of New York psychotherapy, Dr. Seymour Meitelbrun, directed Brinkvale Psychiatric from 1925 to 1952, and his stamp remains strong on the current staff. Dr. Meitelbrun was well known for his willingness to look far and wide for any treatment that would help his patients. Due to his relentless research, Dr. Meitelbrun was able to attempt treatments that no one else in the country, or even the world, had tried, and his results are unmatched in the annals of modern mental health treatment.
Dr. Meitelbrun might well be said to be the guiding spirit of today’s Brinkvale Psychiatric Institute. His dedication to his patients, his willingness to try anything to help them, and his boundless curiosity remain with us today, ensuring that we will not rest until we have tried everything in our power to help those in our care.
